These pictures were taken at the Brenham community center and fireman's training facility just five days ago. Now all that's left are pink spots, confirmed to be mold, that are temporarily shutting down the hall. 22 events were supposed to take place at the training center.
Design II Catering owner, David Folschinsky said, "It kind of caught us off guard because with that short of notice, there's not a lot of other venues that we could go to."
The county's Chamber of Commerce is hosting a big fundraiser in two weeks, and with the recent change in plans, Design II catering now has to revamp their game plan.
"There's really not a big kitchen facility," said Folschinsky.
The Salem Volunteer Fire Department usually raises about $20,000 with their annual fundraiser.
Fire Chief Gene Swonke said, "This is our life blood. We depend on all donations."
Their fundraiser has been at the training center for the past 15 years.
"People have been coming here for so long, that they may forget and not come to the right location," said Chief Swonke.
This year they'll also spend money on catering.
Chief Swonke said, "Before we did all the cooking ourselves, 2,600 pounds of meat, 700 to 800 pounds of potatoes, 100 gallons of green beans."
David Folschinsky said, "We've been known to work and do seated China dinners out in the middle of pastures, so this is just a small...bog for us to cross."
The community is coming together to make it all happened and these are two groups that are showing they can handle the heat in the kitchen.
A mold expert says they're going to most likely have to strip the walls down to their metal frames. The center could be closed for at least 3 months or for the rest of the year. This is the first case of mold they've had in 26 years.

Someone is taking Brenham for a ride. While mold issues are yucky, there is scant real evidence of mold being a health problem. Most homes would be torn down if ordinary folks adhered to the standard being applied here. While it is true that some molds will produce various toxins, you really need a lot of the mold and the right conditions to generate enough to do any harm--doubtful it ever really happens, and generally healthy people won't get infected by the common molds that grow on walls. Wash, disinfect, dehumidify and stop panicing. Stop spending money needlessly on remediation that may not really be necessary.
