All this week, Brazos Valley This Morning is getting you ready to go back to school. Monday morning, healthy habits were the topic of discussion.

Dr. Alan Xenakis from the Texas A&M Health Science Center joined the show to discuss sleep habits.

Among the suggestions:

- Take TV screens and computer monitors out of the room or turn them off because they can upset sleep rhythms

- Don't use Benedryl or Tylenol PM regularly to help kids sleep because they could start suffering memory loss

- Make sure the kids are getting enough sleep. From age 5 through middle school, upwards of ten hours are recommended. Teenagers need slightly less.

Also, Dr. Xenakis discussed the all-important backpack, and how many students are not wearing it properly and/or overloading the bag.

Besides wearing the pack using both shoulder straps and avoiding buying packs with only the single strap, the general rule is not to have the bag weigh more than ten percent of the wearer's body weight.

Hear much on these topics by watching the video with this story.

Tuesday on Brazos Valley This Morning, nutrition experts from area schools will be in to talk about healthy eating and what schools are doing to help on that front.

More sleep tips as provided by Dr. Xenakis:

- If your child can't fall asleep within 15-30 minutes, can't wake up easily without being bugged repeatedly, and aren't awake and alert all day, they're likely not getting enough sleep.

- Wind down an hour before bedtime, including turning off the TV and the video games.

- Get up at the same time each morning to establish a good routine.

- Reading or listening to music can be relaxing.

- Put water near the bed to keep them hydrated.

- Don't use bedtime as a threat. Teach them that sleep should be enjoyable.

- Caffeine and sugar before bed could disrupt the sleep cycle.

More tips on backpack use:

- The wider the straps on the bags, the better, and bags with metal frames provide more support.

- If your school allows them, backpacks with wheels will help your back.

- To avoid heavy loads, try to make frequent trips to your locker.

- Plan homework out to avoid toting tons of books home.

- Bend at the knees when lifting backpacks to your shoulders.

Who would give their own children medication to make them sleep on purpose? Ask my Scott and White pediatrician, I do not trust Benadryl regardless if it is prescribed by the MD or not. Thanks Dr. Xenakis for asking parents to NOT use Benadryl as a sleep aid. Children are a blessing and should be read to sleep or cuddled by their mommies; not medically induced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
