The investigation continues into the accidental shooting death of 10-year-old Brazos Valley boy.

Dylan Rumfield died Monday night.

Police say a 12-year-old boy was handling a rifle in his bedroom when it went off and struck Rumfield in the chest.

This incident has highlighted the importance of gun safety.

4-H is one local organization that offers training courses.

More than 10,000 Texas students are in the shooting sports program which emphasizes proper techniques for using and handling guns safely.

Parents also need to take an active role.

"Fundamentally what you are doing is you're keeping the firearms inaccessible you're keeping the ammunition stored in a separate place for the firearms itself and you're teaching the kids that they're not going to touch them without parental permission," said Ron Howard, Ph.D., a professor and youth development specialist for 4-H.

Texas Parks and Wildlife and the National Rifle Association also offer classes.

"The best option available is to remove all the firearms." Which you can do in your own home, but NOT at your neighbors (unless you're one of those "send the Gestapo house to house and take em all away" nits). Locking up the guns you have control over is a good idea, and for most firearms, cable type gun locks are available free from any police department and Parks and Wildlife. But, as has been said, the only way to protect the kids "out in the world" is to make sure that they always remember that even when it looks unloaded and your finger isn't on the trigger, guns sometimes go bang and whatever is in front of it better be something you don't care about.

The best option available is to remove all the firearms. You'll see that it's much more difficult to kill someone (often the spouse in domestic violence incidents involving a gun) with your bare hands. Even with a knife, it's harder to kill a person (see statistics from England in this regards). Since the act itself is much more intimate, some people may be less likely to act on their impulses (a firearm is much less personal).

The NRA's Eddie Eagle program had been very successful at teaching children firearms safety. It is kind of like the stop, drop and roll we were told by firefighters , when we were kids. Eddie Eagle is a costumed character that tells kids if they find a gun, don't touch it and tell a grown up, immediately.
