DALLAS (AP) - A jury in Dallas has convicted a man of animal cruelty in the fatal torture of his ten-month-old dog.
Caregivers named the animal "Mercy."
The penalty phase begins today for 22-year-old Deshawn Brown.
Prosecutors say Brown, who faces up to ten years in prison, was upset that the dog would not breed.
The injured pit bull mix puppy was found in April 2006 behind an apartment complex.
Investigators say the animal had been stabbed, doused with gasoline and set on fire. She later died.
The defense said Brown was innocent and nobody saw him hurt the animal.
Several witnesses say they saw Brown with a gas can after the dog was set ablaze.
