Police are investigating a stabbing at Hempstead High School. School officials say a student assaulted another student during class on Thursday.

The names of the students are not being released.

Hempstead High School principal Gary Bates believes the incident was handled in a timely and professional manner.

Bates sent a letter home with students informing parents of the attack, assuring them that it was an isolated incident.

In the letter, Bates writes, "the safety and well-being of your children are our top priority at Hempstead High School."

Classes resumed immediately after the attack, and further investigation by the Hempstead Police Department is pending.

The victim of the attack is said to be doing well.
