Mumford School Fire

The old portion of Mumford School went up in flames Sunday afternoon virtually destroying the building which was built in 1925.

Despite being a Sunday, the school superintendent, a teacher and some students were at the school when they noticed smoke in the old section .

The superintendent says they took down part of a wall and found a small fire which was put out. Unfortunately, the fire had already spread and within minutes, the attic was fully engulfed.

Dozens of firefighters from numerous departments helped to keep the fire from spreading to the new building. But, they could not save the historic schoolhouse.

The building was used for class projects and storage and as a result will not affect class schedules.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating whether the fire was accidental or arson.
