Calvert Gets New Mayor

The resignation of former Mayor Briscoe Cain was accepted by city council Monday night.

Cain turned in his resignation during a special city council meeting last week.

Monday, the council appointed Marcus Greaves as the new Mayor of Calvert. Greaves was currently serving as Mayor Pro-Tem. He's hoping to make positive changes for the citizens of Calvert.

"We need to work together for advancement of the city. I know I'm new. I've only been on council for 3 months and I need to learn some things. But I know I don't all the answers. We need to work together instead of being at each others throats." Greaves says.

Citizens presented a petition to council in favor of closing down 2 of their railroad crossings.

If the city decides to close the crossings, that could mean a $540,000 grant from TXDOT and the Union Pacific Railroad.

People hope the grant money could go to street repairs.
