Two Huntsville residents are facing trouble with the law after sheriff's investigators say they cashed bad checks at area banks across the Brazos Valley.

22-year-old Don Archie and 41-year-old Latasha Riles were arrested last week accused of cashing bad checks at banks in Grimes County. The two are related by marriage.

"They came in to our new accounts department here in Anderson and opened an account, passed our things that we do on new accounts with no problems looked like a good account," said Debby Kimich, assistant cashier and bookkeeper for the First National Bank of Anderson.

Kimich said within the first two days the account was opened two suspicious checks were deposited and then cashed out.

"Let's check out the checks that were deposited, I called out the bank the accounts were drawn off of, they could not verify, they verified that was not a good an open account so therefore we did not release any more funds," Kimich added.

Kimich said the checks appeared to be real.

"It looked like to me and without going through great detail the checks probably were once a business. They didn't look to be a bogus check but it probably was a check they found," she said.

Sheriff's Investigators say Archie and Riles stole more than $1,500 from First National in Anderson as well as Citizens State Bank in Navasota and the trail doesn't end there.

"Through our investigation we also were able to determine that there was numerous other banks in our surrounding counties such as in Washington County, Brenham, Texas, Huntsville, Texas and Conroe," said Grimes County Sheriff's Lieutenant Blake Jarvis.

Jarvis said it's a fairly common practice.

"They had fraudulent checks from closed accounts they deposited them into a current checking account they had at the First National Bank of Anderson and was receiving cash from those checks," Jarvis said.

"I feel like we are probably going to see more and more of this so to me it should be alert for the banks to work together if we see something suspicious you know let the people out there know," said Debby Kimich.

The investigation continues to determine just how many banks were hit.

Don Archie is charged with theft of property and is out of the Grimes County Jail after posting $2,500 bond.

Latasha Riles is charged with theft of property as well as theft by check out of Bexar County and is out of the Grimes County Jail after posting $3,300 bond.
