Two people are injured after being struck by lightning in Eastern Montgomery County.

According to emergency management officials, around 7p.m. a man in his twenties and a nine-year-old girl were both struck by lightning.

The two were struck at a soccer field at Crippen Elementary in New Caney.

KHOU-TV in Houston reports the man was coaching a soccer game at the school when he was injured.

Witnesses said the 21-year-old coach was unconscious, but paramedics were able to get him breathing and transported him by ambulance to a Houston hospital.

The 9-year-old girl was transported to a hospital where officials say she is expected to be okay.

A school district spokesperson tells KHOU-TV, the team is not a part of the school district and was just using the field to practice.

After the incident the rest of the children were taken inside the school’s cafeteria to wait for their parents to pick them up.

Unfortunately, letting children run around in open fields is a common occurrence. I have seen parents exit a little league game after an alarm has sounded and then allow their children to run around in an open field while they wait in their cars for the game to resume. What the city and school should do is post a huge sign warning these dumb parents that they will be fined $500 if they or their children get caught on or around the field after an alarm has gone off.

The whole thing was tragic and I pray they both make a full recovery. I agree that when there is chance for bad weather safety needs to come first. I don't agree with people pointing fingers and calling names. I'm sure parents had the choice to take their children out of the bad weather. No game is priority over our children's safety. For those people that want to call names just remember that these are two human lives that could have been lost. Even if they were in the process of getting to safety, we can not control mother nature.
