TYLER, Texas (AP) - A Smith County office building was evacuated when remnants of a nearly 20-year-old methamphetamine lab started smoking in the basement.
Sheriff J.B. Smith says the chemicals had been stored in the basement of the Smith County Office Building since 1988.
There were no reports of injuries in Thursday's incident, but the building was closed for the rest of the day.
Smith says the old meth lab was kept as evidence before it was known how dangerous such chemicals are.
He says his office had recently gotten approval to destroy the old evidence. Two deputies were taking inventory of old cases in the basement when the box started smoking.
Emergency workers in protective suits worked to clean up the mess.
