ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - A Louisiana gunman is dead, shot and killed by police early today.
They used explosives to blast their way into a one-story law office in Alexandria, Louisiana, where the gunman had shot five people yesterday, killing two of them.
The shooter, identified as 63-year-old John Ashley, was killed in a brief gunbattle.
The two people he killed are identified as the son of a lawyer, and a postal worker who happened to be delivering the mail.
Alexandria's Mayor Jacques Roy isn't speculating on a motive for the shootings but says Ashley was a retired city maintenance worker.
During the standoff, the gunman refused to talk to mediators and fought off attempts by officers to reach the victims. He even fired at a remote-controlled robot that police sent into the building.
