How would you like to cut your gas spending in half?

Toyota is introducing new demo models of The Prius Plug-In Hybrid. News 3 brings you a sneak peak of the cars, before they go into mass production.

It may look like any other Hybrid that combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor, but the difference is the Prius Plug-In Hybrid can operate in electric-only mode. It powers itself on lithium-ion batteries alone for up to 13 miles or as fast 62 miles per hour.

Pam Rosas said, "It's pretty awesome. I think it'll be great."

With the new hybrid all you really need to do is, plug it in. With a 110 volt outlet, it takes about three hours to fully charge.

Paul Atkinson, of Atkinson Toyota, said, "We don't know if the future technology is hybrids, gasoline cars, hydrogen, electric cars, but whatever it is, Toyota's going to be on top."

Toyota spends $1 million on research and development around the clock. Toyota is bringing 160 electric vehicles, or EV's, to the U.S. as part of a demonstration program to collect information about real-world use and to promote the establishment of charging stations in cities.

"{You} don't have to stop for gas every time you turn around, just plug the car in and let's go," said Pam Rosas.

"Its not just about mpg, its about the environment and the right thing to do and we have a lot of that mindset in Bryan-College Station," said Atkinson. Atkinson Toyota in Bryan is one of the select few to have these demo units to display for one day.

Atkinson added, "It's an incredible opportunity, being the first dealer to have these to show anybody."

And what do consumer's think?

"You have to be able to afford to buy it, so it has to be where people can afford it," said Rosas.

There's still no set price for the Prius Plug-In Hybrid, but Toyota reps estimate it will cost around $30,000.

"In about two years we will have these vehicles here in Brazos county," said Atkinson.

Now that electricity is a type of fuel, you have more to choose from, and more to keep track of.

Yep, my wife only works 8 miles from our home, but she's tough. She'll be able to push it that last 6 miles to get home. In Europe there are currently diesel cars that get better overall mileage and pollute less than a Prius. Why can't we either have them here or have the American car companies produce vehicles that do the same? Oh, that's right. It would reduce oil company profits.

Most of our driving is 13 miles or less roundtrip, so this would be great for us.
