Regent Consider 4 Chancellor Finalists

There are four finalists but no front runner.

That's the word from Texas A&M System Regent Erle Nye.

Friday the regents met in closed session to discuss the position of chancellor.

The decision may come as soon as two weeks. That will be five months since the search began.

Out of 65 candidates, 4 were chosen as finalists...including current Interm Chancellor Benton Cocanougher.

Regent Nye says, however, there is no clear leader at this point.

"We're very conscientious of our obligations to deliberate in public and the executive session is only to receive and share information. So, No--there is not a clear leader and the reason why is we won't let it get to that point," Nye says.

Nye says one finalist will be named in the coming weeks, then a 21 day waiting period will take effect before the candidate is officially appointed to the position.

The board will also appoint the vice chancellor and dean of agriculture.

A critical job that reports to the university president and the chancellor.

Also discussed was the system's plan for the next legislative session.

A top priority is getting back the 175 million dollars the system lost last year and request 160 million dollars for new projects.
