The Bryan Police Department says it can do the job of animal control cheaper and with more services.

A $220,000 contract for field work services will be terminated with the shelter.

Bryan Police plan to hire three new officers and a supervisor to take over the city's animal control work.

Last year the city paid the shelter $216,000 for field work and $111,000 in shelter fees.

The changes will take effect Jan. 1.

The terminated contract will mean current animal control officers at the shelter may lose their job but they are encouraged to apply with the city.

The changes came after complaints from residents that animal control would not work after hours and on weekends.
