It's a month long celebration of commemorating the hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage month is about the traditions and ancestry of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the countries of Central and South America.

Andrea Parada grew up in Houston...but her parents are from El Salvador. Her first language was spanish. Parada says when recognizing Hispanic culture and heritage. It's important to know that its more than just the music and food.

"We also have poetry and politics. We're involved in every aspect of what being hispanic is." Parada adds.

Hispanic Heritage Month began September 15th and runs through October 15th. Several Latino organizations on at Texas A&M are working to get students involved. They want to address key issues affecting the education and quality of life of all Hispanics.

"Their addressing things as far as leadership, education and social issues." says Myra Gonzalez, member of Professional Hispanic Network.

The month long observance celebrates the culture and diversity of the hispanic community. Those of all different backgrounds come together and learn a bit of history.

"We're not all Mexicans..there's Puerto Ricans, Venezuelans, Columbians. It means us becoming more aware and embracing our differences and getting enriched in our own knowledge." Parada says.

Gonzalez adds, "Its just a reminder of how great the hispanic culture is. Recognizing cultural differences and appreciating those."

Ambition, work ethic and determination are the larger characteristics of the Hispanic culture that are celebrated as part of Hispanic heritage month.

The university is hoping to instill that in their students.
