HOUSTON (AP) - A 13-year-old Houston boy whose mother and stepfather allegedly locked him in a closet and fed him only a liquid dietary supplement has been placed in state custody.
Child Protective Services also has taken custody of the boy's four siblings.
A CPS spokeswoman tells the Houston Chronicle that the teen weighed only 72 pounds when the couple took him to a Houston hospital on September 19th because his urine was brown. A full examination showed he had broken bones in various stages of healing, old burns, abrasions, scratches and bruises.
The spokeswoman says Geneva Foster and Michael Ryan told officials the teen ate a lot but wouldn't gain weight. But CPS says the boy was near starvation and gained about 10 pounds while hospitalized.
Foster and Ryan were charged with felony injury to a child. They remain in the Harris County Jail today with bonds set at $250,000 each.
