Belo Cuts

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas-based Belo Corporation says it will cut 250 jobs by November first. Most of the layoffs are expected at Belo's flagship newspaper -- The Dallas Morning News.

Publisher James Moroney says the company won't offer buyouts to employees. Company officials say Belo had already eliminated 80 to 100
positions that were vacant on July first. Those won't count toward the 250 layoffs. The layoffs, which amount to about three percent of Belo's
workforce, were prompted by flat revenue since 2001 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Belo also is reassessing the future of its Dallas-based Texas Cable News television operation.

Belo disclosed August fifth that The Morning News had overstated newspaper sales.

Belo is paying cash and make-good ads at a cost of 27 (M) million dollars, plus taking a charge against earnings.
