AUSTIN — A University of Texas student died early Sunday morning after falling from the fifth-floor balcony of his dormitory, officials said.

Daniel Gregory Toole, 20, of Houston, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:21 a.m. at the Goodall Wooten Co-Ed Dormitory. He was a 2006 graduate of Memorial High and was a junior majoring in computer science.

"This is a terrible accident," said his father, Shaun Toole.

Austin police are investigating the incident.

"We're waiting for the investigation to wrap up, waiting to see how this happened, waiting for toxicology results," Sgt. Richard Stresing said.

Toole enjoyed bicycling and tubing down the river in Austin, his father said. The family had planned to travel to New Zealand in December.
