Survivors Hope Voters Take Cancer Into Account

Cancer survivors in the newly-drawn District 17 made their way around the region Mondayin an effort to make their voices heard.

The American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network sponsored a bus tour from Waco to Bryan hoping to make cancer research and treatment a bigger issue in the upcoming elections. The group, made up of cancer survivors and activists, spent more than a dozen hours, stopping at various locations to hand out information to interested voters.

According to ACS, around 2,000 people in the Brazos Valley are diagnosed with cancer each year, and 700 die of the disease.

"Representative Wohlgemuth and Chet Edwards, we have had them fill out questionnaires that we have posted on our website so that people in their district will know how they stand on cancer issues," said Barbara Kruegar, a 15-year survivor of cancer who spoke at the rally.
