A Grimes County man admits to murder but says it was defense.

In opening arguments, Defense Attorney David Barron says his client, 36-year-old Rodney Gray was only trying to protect two young girls when he shot 30-year-old Jeffrey Pierce last March.

The 15-year-old witness to the shooting took the stand Tuesday.

She testified Pierce showed up to the house stoned and wanted to come inside.

She says Gray told him no repeatedly before firing a warning shot, then shooting him in the chest.

Grimes County Prosecutor Andrea Bender told jurors the killing was unprovoked and Pierce was not a threat.

Testimony continues Wednesday.
