A routine act turned deadly Wednesday morning for an elderly Franklin man.
The Department of Public Safety says Leonard Cazey, 87, was crossing Highway 79 near New Baden to get his mail, when he was hit by a car and killed.
The driver did not see Cazey, who was wearing dark clothing.
He immediately stopped and called police for help.
DPS officials said the driver was traveling at a normal speed and will not be charged.
Cazey was pronounced dead at the scene.
