Navasota ISD Revamps School Bond Proposal

A rejected school bond disappointed Navasota school board trustees in September, but now there's new hope.

"We're not to be deterred. We're very determined that we're going to do what we can to provide the best that we can for our students," said Navasota School Board President Linda McLain.

Voters turned down a $25 million bond during the September 11 election.

A December 11 school bond election will act as a second chance for the school district to try to get the funding it needs, but with a different approach.

Navasota ISD superintendent David Faltys said voters complained of not having enough information to make a good decision in September. The school board hopes three new detailed proposals will change that.

The first is for $18 million and involves the renovation and expansion of the primary school. It also allots funds for a new elementary in the Plantersville-Stoneham area.

Proposal two is a $5 million plan for general maintenance at the high school.

The final bond proposal is a $2 million package for a new football stadium and athletic facilities.

Faltys said out of all the proposals, proposal one is an immediate need, which will call for consolidating grades pre-K through 4th under one roof.

"There's a lot of research and studies that have proven that grade alignment has a huge impact on student achievement and as well as high school dropout rates," said Faltys.

Faltys said it's going to take a lot more publicity.

"We just need to go back and look and make sure they know what the bond is about and what it's going to do for our community, not only now, but next year and the next 20 years," said Faltys.

District officials hope breaking one big proposal, into three, will increase their chances of having at least some of their more immediate needs met.
