HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston police officer is in stable condition after getting shot by a suspect who was handcuffed but hiding a pistol in his waistband.

Officer Victor Hill was shot late Saturday night shortly after arresting a Russian national suspected of burglarizing cars in an apartment complex. Hill handcuffed the 22-year-old man behind his back, as per department policy.

Police say that's when the man produced a pistol from his back waistband and fired upward.

The shooting touched off a manhunt involving police helicopters and canine units. The suspect remained at large late last night.
