The Bryan Police department is celebrating the life of its first African American police officer.

Eighty-seven-year-old Willie Idlebird died Sunday after a fight with cancer. He served for seven years on the Bryan force beginning in 1951.

After that, he served our community as a carpenter. Bryan police say the department is better today because of Idlebird's efforts 53 years ago.
