The University of Texas at Austin no longer boasts the largest number of students in the nation.
Preliminary numbers show U-T loses the enrollment lead this semester -- for the first time since 1997. Ohio State University in Columbus leads with 50-thousand, 995 students. The University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities has 50-thousand, 954 students enrolled for the fall semester.
The preliminary figure for Texas is 50-thousand, 403. U-T's official enrollment is set to be released Monday.
Enrollment at U-T dropped about two percent from last fall's 51-thousand, 426.
A decrease in student enrollment was part of the effort to follow the Task Force on Enrollment Strategy's recommendations made last December. U-T's goal is to bring down the student-to-faculty ratio to 19-to-1.
