Carefully crafted Porshes, Corvettes, Mustangs and other racing cars built to 1972 regulations heated up the track at the Texas World Speedway.

The Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing Corporation hosted its 16th Annual Vintage Fall Festival Sunday.

"Once you get on the track and realize what there is to it, it's kind of addictive," Dave Peterson said, who happens to be the corporation's president. "It's like driving on a freeway, but it's three times the speed limit."

Peterson says the draw of vintage car racing is comparing the workmanship and horse power of classic racing machines. Racing vintage Porsche 911's has more than kept the interest of local anesthesiologist Michael Saxe.

"I fell into it first as a hobby and fell into it as a second profession," Saxe said.

The doctor operates his own racing team. Saxe says what he enjoys most is racing against other drivers who know how to handle raw power and speed without technological training wheels like anti-lock brakes.

"Very technical skills are required to move these cars around the track at its peak performance," Saxe said.

For Houston resident Mike Callahan, the Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing helped him rekindle a 30-year love affair with racing, and at the same time acquired some neighborly assistance.

"I hooked the neighbors in like fish on a line and we formed Team Geezer," Callahan said. "Three identical cars and one great, great time."

Callahan says racing has an added bonus.

"The driving uniform is a chick magnet," Callahan suggests with smile.

Vintage car drivers say racing events provide the perfect gathering for family and friends while keeping automobile history in working, mint condition.
