Just Hours to Go Before District 17 Debate

The time is fast approaching. Saturday night, the lights will go up on Arlene Wohlgemuth and Chet Edwards's biggest debate in their race for District 17's seat. For both candidates, it's all about calm reflection at this point.

"I think Chet will do very well," said Selena Shilad, communications director for the Edwards campaign. "I think he is very comfortable about his record, and I think he's very relaxed and right now he is very focused on the points that he wants to make."
"She's [Wohlgemuth's] very familiar with the issues that are important to this district," said Gina Hollenbeck, Wohlgemuth's communications director, "and she's done a great job of getting to know the views and values of the district."

Hundreds of questions have flooded in to KBTX that the candidates will answer over the course of the hour-long debate, which will air at 6 p.m. on KBTX. A rebroadcast will air following News Star Three at 10.

Not only will the broadcast be informational, but also wide-reaching, as it will be seen across the district and the state. The debate will utilize the latest in television technology. Our partnership with KAMU has brought us into high definition studios, meaning the debate will be seen in a clearer sound and picture quality.

"We are very pleased that we can be working with KBTX and KWTX to do this joint effort," said KAMU's station manager, Jon Bennett, "and I think it's a very strong partnership that we have in cooperation with all these parties to do this for our viewer, not for our gain, but for the viewer."

Shilad mentioned Edwards would discuss, "fighting for higher water quality at Lake Waco, more funding for educational institutions, stronger national defense, homeland security."

As for Wohlgemuth's campaign, they chose to remain ambiguous. "You're just going to have to wait and see," Hollenbeck said.
