Bush Seeks to Warm Up Chilly Canadian Relations

By: Associated Press
Updated: Tue 11:59 AM, Nov 30, 2004

President Bush has arrived in Canada for a two-day visit aimed at repairing ties frayed by the Iraq war.

Air Force One landed outside Ottawa at mid-morning, and the
president went straight to a meeting with Prime Minister Paul
Martin.

As his motorcade arrived at the Canadian Parliament building,
hundreds of demonstrators jeered on the lawn outside. Organizers
are expecting thousands later in the day.

Bush's schedule in Canada also includes a speech in Halifax,
Nova Scotia -- to thank Canadians for housing thousands of
US-bound travelers stranded on 9/11.

But it does not include a speech to Parliament. Asked if Bush
feared heckling, Press Secretary Scott McClellan said Bush opted to
speak "directly to the Canadian people" in Halifax.
