By a 5-to-1 vote ...the College Station city council agreed to move forward with a proposed ban of outdoor drinking at Northgate.

The next step will be a petition to the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission for permission to consider a local open container ordinance in the Northgate central business district.

The vote came after a lengthy discussion by both citizens and council members. Several residents spoke against the proposal saying it would end a local tradition. But police want the ban to curb alcohol-related crime.

For years, the Northgate Promenade has been a popular spot for residents and college students to bring their own beer.

The Police are proposing to eliminate open containers or at least banning guests from bringing in kegs and coolers.
