SH 6 Bridge Re-opened After Damage

By: TxDot
Updated: Fri 10:25 AM, Oct 22, 2004

After only two weeks since the bridge was damaged, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has completed the repair of the bridge structure at SH 6 and SH 30 and has re-opened all lanes of traffic.

The bridge was hit Friday morning, Oct. 8, 2004. Bridge engineers were dispatched from the local and Austin TxDOT offices to review the damage. They determined that the inside lane of southbound SH 6 could be re-opened. Young Contractors, Inc. were hired by TxDOT to perform the immediate clean-up. Young Contractors worked quickly and continuously until the clean-up was complete and re-opened the SH 30 lanes around 8:30 p.m. that same night.

Due to local and Austin TxDOT personnel working through the weekend, plans were developed for emergency repairs to the bridge. TxDOT’s goal was to have the bridge re-opened prior to the Texas A&M vs. Colorado football game.

The contract was bid on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004 and Gary Fuqua, Inc. was awarded the $70,000.00 repair project.

“We only had a few contractors want to bid of this because the time frame was so aggressive,” says Catherine Hejl, Director of Maintenance for the local Bryan district, “But Fuqua has worked many long hours throughout nights and weekends to meet the communities needs. We are deeply appreciative to them.”

The goal was to have the both roadways open by noon Friday. SH 6 was reopened at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning and SH 30 was fully reopened by 9:30 a.m.. TxDOT appreciates everyone’s patience during this emergency work.
