It's the busiest road between here and Austin and now it's getting a face lift.
Twelve hundred vehicles a day hit the black top between Caldwell and Lee County.
Highway 21 is the main road to Austin and now TxDot is spending over $21 million to make it safer.
Burleson County officials say Highway 21 is dangerous with only two lanes.
The 11-mile strip is being widened to four lanes, just like the other side of Highway 21 between Caldwell and Bryan.
The road construction will take three years to complete but civic leaders have been pushing for the expansion much longer than that.
"This has been a long process. About seven years in the making and it'll be nice when the construction is finally done," says County Judge Mike Sutherland.
Residents say the inconvenience of construction is only a small price to pay for improved conditions down the road.
In another 25 years the traffic is expected to increase to 17,000 cars a day, but by then the four-lane highway will be one of the safest roads in the county.
