Jerusalem is already lit up for the Festival of Lights, and some jewish families in Bryan/College Station are doing the same.
December 7th was the first night of Hanukkah also know as the Festival of Lights.
A ceremony to light the first of eight candles was held at the Hillel Foundation at Texas A&M University.
Hanukkah commemorates the ancient Israelites' victory over foreign invaders and the restoration of the Biblical temple after its desecration.
"It's the first time that we know of that the people revolted not for money not for power but for the ideas that each individual should have the right to pray to God as he or she sees fit," said Rabbi Peter Tarlow.
The Hillel Foundation's Hanukkah celebration is December 10th at 8 p.m.
