Texas A&M System Chancellor Michael McKinney has a unique perspective on the hiring of Mike Sherman as the A&M head football coach.
McKinney's son, Steve, was a star offensive lineman at A&M in the mid-1990s when Sherman was in his second stint as the Aggies' offensive line coach. Steve is currently on the O-line of the Houston Texans, where Sherman was the assistant coach and offensive coordinator until accepting the A&M job.
Another McKinney boy, Seth, was recruited to A&M by Sherman, though he never played for him. Seth is currently a member of the Cleveland Browns.
"First of all, he's really smart," the chancellor said. "There's a lot to be said for that. He's very, very smart. He understands the offense, and he's really good about picking people around you, and that's like being a chancellor or a president or the coach. It has very little to do with what you know. It has to do with who you get around you."
McKinney says he and his sons are very happy with the hire of Sherman.
