AUSTIN (AP) - Travis County and federal authorities are seeking the extradition of a former University of Texas student accused of being drunk when she caused a fatal car wreck eleven years ago.
Evelyn Mezzich now lives in Lima, Peru.
The 29-year-old faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter stemming from the November 1996 death of her roommate Lindsay Brashier.
Authorities say Mezzich posted bail and then disappeared about a year into her court proceedings.
The case regained momentum earlier this year when Austin television station KVUE contacted U.S. Representative Michael McCaul regarding Mezzich's case.
McCaul's office says the U.S. extradition treaty with Peru changed a few years ago, making Mezzich eligible to be returned to Austin.
Mezzich's MySpace page says she is married, pregnant and working as a psychologist.
McCaul says the extradition papers are being processed in the State Department.
