School health education books in Texas are getting a major overhaul after ten years, and the controversy surrounding sex-ed is still on many minds. That's why College Station's school district is asking for parents input on selecting a new health book.

Kiki O'shey has four children, three being teenagers, and she wants to make sure she knows what they're being taught when it comes to sex. She will play an active role in helping College Station ISD select the appropriate health text book.

" With four children in the school district, I'm very involved. We go through all their sex education books and the work that they bring home in health," said O'shey

School officials say it's important to note that the fundamentals and abstinence based programs will not be changing, just the resources and tools used to teach them.

" The philosophy is very clear and we get that philosophy directly from the state. We are to teach an abstinence based sex education program. We have been doing that for years and will continue to do that," said CSISD Deputy Superintendent, Eddie Coulson.

But sex education only makes up a small section in health books. Sex ed. doesn't appear in the text until junior high. Other topics heavily emphasized are nutrition, fitness, decision making, behavior, and drug and alcohol abuse.

The district says it will be listening to parent's concerns, if there are any.

" Obviously sex education is important and we want to teach sex education the right way at the right time to the right kids. That's the reason we have more parents involved in this process," said Coulson.

College Station parents can review possible health textbooks for all grade levels at the district's administration building this Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and next Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Forms will also be available to fill out.

The health education council will make their textbook recommendation in March.

School administrators note that parents do have the option to take their child out of health for the sex education portion of the class.
