Sherry Smith has been found guilty of capital murder in the deaths of her husband and father-in-law. She was immediately sentenced to life in prison following the verdict. The jury made its decision after less than four hours of deliberation.
Smith is convicted of fatally shooting Carey and Charles Smith for what prosecutors say was nothing more than greed. During the trial, Smith's ex-husband Daniel Gardner testified she talked openly about getting rid of her husband. The defense tried to discredit Gardener as someone willing to say anything to save himself.
Although this was a capital offense, District Attorney Tuck McLain decided before the trial he would not seek the death penalty.
