Dixie Chicken Owner Dies

Don Ganter, owner of the legendary Dixie Chicken, died Monday night.

Ganter was hospitalized in Abilene for back and heart problems.

The family has tenatively scheduled a rosary in College Station on Friday at the Memorial Funeral Chapel with services to be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in College Station.

Ganter was known for owning most of the Northgate skyline including Shadow Canyon, Dixie Chicken, Dry Bean Saloon, Hole in the Wall, Brazos Hall, Satchel's and other establishments around town including Alfred T. Hornback's and Chicken Oil Company.

The Dixie Chicken celebrated its 30th anniversary last Friday but Ganter was unable to attend.

He is survived by three daughters, Jennifer, Katy and Jackie and wife Angela.
