A local bird rehabiltation center is hoping to save the life of a red-winged hawk that was allegedly shot by a Bryan man on Sunday.
Bryan police say they responded to a "shots fired' call on North Parker and found the injured bird in a cage in the suspects garage.
40-year-old Eugene Acosta faces up to a $500 fine. Game Warden Chad Jones says Acosta was apparently planning to kill the bird and have it mounted, claiming he didn't know it was illegal.
Police say Acosta was also charged with theft when they discovered stolen street signs at his home.
The bird will be taken to A&M on Monday for tests to see if it will survive. The Eyes Of Texas Center wants to get the word out that it is illegal to keep or kill federally protected birds of prey like the red-winged hawk.
