The battle to stay alive ended Saturday afternoon for a 14-year-old Franklin boy who had been hospitalized with a lung infection.

Tyler Varvel's condition worsened over the last two days after doctors at an Arkansas hospital discovered a new problem. Surgery soon followed, but led to complications. This morning, doctors told his parents there was not anything else they could do.

Tyler's brother and sister arrived in Arkansas Saturday afternoon to say goodbye, and then the teenager was removed from life support.

Varvel fell ill a month ago after flu-like symptoms. That's when the staph infection was discovered. Since then, the community has come together with prayer and fund-raisers. A web site updating his condition was established last month.

Tyler's uncle spoke to KBTX on behalf of the family, and said the boy died peacefully.
