Defrocked Priest Sentenced

By: Associated Press
Updated: Tue 12:00 PM, Feb 15, 2005

The sentence is 12 to 15 years in prison for defrocked priest Paul Shanley.

He was sentenced today in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for repeatedly molesting a boy at a suburban church during the 1980s.

A prosecutor had asked for a life sentence, saying Shanley had "used his collar" as well as his "worshiped status in that community." And he said Shanley had shown "no remorse."

Shanley's lawyer responded that the prosecution's case had been
built on "half-truths and lies."

Shanley -- who is 74 years old -- will be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence. He was also sentenced to ten years probation.

A statement from Shanley's victim -- who's now a 27-year-old firefighter -- was read in court. In it, he said he wants Shanley to "die in prison" -- and that the death should be "slow and painful."

The victim's wife addressed Shanley in court -- calling him a "coward" who "hid behind God."
