Deadly Shooting in Downtown Tyler

At least three people were shot Thursday when a man with a high-powered rifle opened fire in Tyler -- near the Smith County Courthouse.

Deputy U.S. Marshal John Walker told The Associated Press that the gunman had a rifle, and he was shooting at the back of the courthouse.

Walker says the gunman shot a deputy sheriff and two other civilians.

Walker says an off-duty Tyler police officer then shot the suspect -- who got into a pickup and drove away.

There's no immediate word on the status of the gunman and the
wounded people.

A spokeswoman at the East Texas Medical Center said wounded
people have been admitted, but didn't have more details.

Television footage showed at least one person lying on the
courthouse steps.

Walker says he understands the man may have been upset about a
court case going on, possibly a paternity matter.

Tyler is about 95 miles east of Dallas.
