A lawyer urging the Supreme Court to remove Ten Commandments displays from government grounds has told justices that such monuments "promote religion."
But, Justice Antonin Scalia responded that laws often invoke God's name and he's unsure "why the one is good and the other is bad."
The court is hearing arguments in two cases involving displays in Texas and Kentucky.
Demonstrators on both sides of the issue were gathered outside the court this morning.
The Reverend Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition thinks most Americans support public displays of the Ten Commandments. And a new Associated Press poll backs him up on that.
But, one man warned against the United States beginning "a
slippery slope to theocracy."
