Madisonville's longtime, and sometimes controversial, police chief is stepping down.
George Sweetin announced plans to retire effective January 31. But he says he would remain with the department until a permanent replacement is hired and an officer-involved shooting case is resolved.
Sweetin has weathered a handful of battles during recent years including allegations of racism lodged by citizens against his department.
Sweetin has been at the post since 1996. The city will conduct a statewide search for his replacement.
