College Station Narrows Fire Chief Search

The city of College Station is one step closer to hiring a new fire chief.

Robert Alley, District Fire Chief in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and James Woydziak, Fire Chief in Manhattan, Kansas, were named finalists by City Manager Tom Brymer.

The two candidates come from the original list of 48 under consideration for the position.

Five candidates traveled to College Station last week for two days of interviews by community panels, City staff, and representatives of the College Station Fire Department command staff and employees.

Brymer and representatives from the College Station Fire Department will make on-site visits to Virginia Beach and Manhattan this month.

Alley began his career as a volunteer firefighter in Virginia Beach in 1973, then moved up through the ranks to District Fire Chief, a position he has held since July 2001.

Woydziak, who began his fire department career in 1971, has served as Fire Chief in Manhattan since October 2000. He has previously headed departments in Emporia, Kansas, and Moline, Illinois.

The city hopes to have a new chief selected by early April, when David Giordano retires.
