Texas A&M students may soon pay more for their diploma, if the board of regents approves a flat tuition rate.

Thursday, regents will vote on implementing a plan to charge students who take above 16 hours the same amount as students between 12 and 14 hours.

The university says the move is to encourage students to graduate on time, and says a student would save hundreds of dollars if they take 18 hours under the current proposal.

University officials also say students could save more than $100,000 by graduating in four years than six because they could already be earning a salary from working.

Regents may also raise tuition rates by 19 dollars per credit hour.

Some student leaders say they're planning to protest against the flat-rate tuition before the regent's meeting.
