Federal money is heading to Brazos Valley roadways, but will it affect traffic in your area? Monday, Congressman Chet Edwards got a first hand look at where local officials want that money to go.
Bryan/College Station is growing and so is the traffic problem.
"We've got to continue to upgrade our infrastructure and that's not a small amount, or else we'll be like Austin. We'll be behind the curb big time," says Brazos County Judge Randy Sims.
A new bill, awaiting senate approval, is earmarking $12 million of federal funds for Brazos County. An additional $5 million has been added to previous monies.
Congressman Chet Edwards hit the road with local officials to see where the money should be spent.
"Thousands of hours will be spent in road congestion. We have to give these projects high priority," says Congressman Chet Edwards.
Top on the list is the Barron Road Overpass project.
TxDot gave it 15 years to complete, Edwards wants it done in less than five.
It will ease the back up on Rock Prairie Road by creating an exit at Barron and an overpass.
Within a year, TxDot plans to make the access road one way, so according to College Station's mayor, it's urgent.
"We can't wait that long, it's a safety issue," says Mayor Ron Silvia.
Next stop was University Drive East where four million dollars will go toward widening the road from two to six lanes.
Bryan took it's turn asking for money to widen Old Reliance Road, the only entrance to a new high school scheduled to be built in three years.
Edwards agrees money will go toward expanding the bridge and roads to and from the new school.
"That traffic is getting heavier and heavier and it's only going to get worse with all the changes that are taking place," says Bryan Mayor Ernie Wentrcek.
Both cities and the county will have to wait until June to find out exactly how much money congress will give them because that's when the bill is expected to be passed.
Additional money will be spent on twelve new busses for the Brazos Transit District and updating facilities at Easterwood Airport.
