It was a night to remember as four outstanding individuals were recognized for their work in making the lives of others better through volunteerism.

The Jefferson Awards recognizes excellence in community service, and Tuesday night four local women were honored for the difference they've made in the Brazos Valley.

Friends and family members of Mell Pruitt, Dr. Alice Blue-McLendon, Audra Smith and Ethel Clark gathered at the George Bush Presidential Library to receive their Jefferson Award medallions during a live broadcast.

Mell Pruitt was selected as the nominee to represent the Brazos Valley at the national Jefferson Award ceremony in Washington DC honoring all Jefferson Awards recipients across the country.

A longtime teacher, Pruitt has been active in numerous civic and charitable organizations, including the St. Joseph Regional Health Center, the Girls Club of the Brazos Valley, the Bethune Women's Club, the North Bryan Community Center and the Brazos Valley African American Museum.

The American Institute for Public Service created the Jefferson Awards in 1972, honoring those who have dedicated time to public service.
