Mass Exodus from Rome Following Funeral

By: Associated Press

ROME -- Most of the pilgrims who attended John Paul's funeral have flowed out of Rome, leaving behind a quiet and rainy St. Peter's Square.

Those remaining are wondering when they'll get to see where the
pope was laid to rest. The Vatican will announce Monday when it will reopen the grottoes deep beneath St. Peter's Basilica. Keeping them closed over the weekend is seen as a way of emptying the city of the huge crowds.

Rome's mayor figures all the pilgrims who came to mourn John Paul doubled his city's regular population of 2.6 million.

With the funeral done, attention now turns toward picking a new pontiff. The conclave is set to begin a week from Monday.
