WATCHES AND WARNINGS

Accident Shuts Down Portion of Earl Rudder

Video will be available shortly

An accident on Harvey Road and Bypass 6 this morning has shut down the southbound lane until repairs can be made.

At 9:35 AM, an A-1 Wrecker truck was travelling westbound on Highway 30. As the vehicle went under the Earl Rudder Freeway overpass and passed under the southbound lanes of traffic, the backhoe being carried on the trailer struck the overpass. A large section of the support beams was damaged.

The driver of the vehicle, 52-year-old Willie Bowser of Caldwell, was uninjured in the accident. He is being cited for violation of the Texas Transportation Code, which states you can't drive under an overpass if your vehicle is too big.

The outside southbound lane of Earl Rudder South will remain closed as TXDOT inspects the damage. Officials say that portion of the road could remain closed through Tuesday morning and possibly longer. College Station Police urges motorists to use Harvey Mitchell Parkway and University Drive as alternate routes while the damage is assessed.

Last October, the same overpass was damaged when a garbage truck's hoist hit the structure. TXDOT estimated the damage in that accident to be in the range of $125,000.
