Apr. 8, 2005 -- James M. Carlson, a senior political science major from Plano, has been elected 2005-06 student body president at the Texas A&M University. He will take office later this spring at the nation’s seventh-largest university with more than 44,000 students enrolled for the current academic year.

“I don't take myself too seriously, but I do take responsibilities seriously," Carlson said in describing his approach to his new position. He said he plans to continue to meet with students and hear their opinions so as to better represent them.

During his time at Texas A&M, Carlson has been involved in a host of student activities, most recently serving as chief of staff for the current student body president, Jack Hildebrand. Carlson said he gained valuable experience and insight into what it takes to do the job as a result of serving in that capacity.

Carlson’s other experiences come from working as a White House intern, serving as chairman of the Student Service Fee Advisory Board and through his work experience. The latter included managing his own lawn-mowing business, working in sales and repair at a Richardson bike shop and serving as an administrative intern at Johnson & Johnson.

Last year, Carlson won the Buck Weirus Spirit Award, given to students who demonstrate a commitment to Texas A&M that embodies the “Aggie Spirit.”
